Jimmy Savile's chauffeur arrested

9 November 2012 Last updated at 09:15 GMT Jimmy Savile's former chauffeur and a second man have been arrested over historic rape allegations not connected to the Savile inquiry.

Police said a 71-year-old - understood to be Savile's ex-chauffeur Ray Teret - and a 61-year-old were arrested at an address in Altrincham, Cheshire.

Det Insp Simon Davies said he wanted to make it "absolutely clear" it was not an investigation into Savile.

The arrests follow three separate allegations of sexual abuse.

Mr Davies said they had led to the arrest of the older man while the second man was arrested in connection with one of the complaints.

Greater Manchester Police said two men were later bailed until 29 November pending further inquries.

The people who had come forward had shown "tremendous courage" and the police's primary focus was to support them during what was "clearly a very traumatic time for them", Mr Davis added.

He said none of the allegations related to "any involvement by Savile", who is being investigated by the Met Police's Operation Yewtree into claims he sexually abused young people.

Police believe the former BBC TV presenter and DJ, who died last year aged 84, could have abused as many as 300 people over a 40-year period.
