Brunswick buys Ace Bowling Center in east Montgomery

Brunswick Bowling & Billiards has purchased Ace Bowling Center on East Boulevard and has left the nearby Brunswick Woodmere Lanes, the company?s local home for more than two decades.

Brunswick workers buzzed around the former Ace Bowling Center building in Stratford Square on Monday while a temporary sign hung outside announcing the arrival of Brunswick Zone. The center remained open throughout the change, and the company said any group events or birthday parties will be held as booked.

Property broker Earl Martin said the purchase was ?substantial,? with Brunswick buying the business along with all the equipment and fixtures in the 38-lane facility while striking a new long-term lease with Sims Investment LLC for the 50,000-square-foot space.

The Brunswick bowling center at 5665 Carmichael Road had been open for 24 years. Brunswick?s Don MacBayne said Monday that the company?s approach has changed a lot since Brunswick Woodmere Lanes was built, and now there?s more of a focus on family entertainment centers that offer better food and a smoke-free environment.

?The purchase of Ace was a strategic move for us because it?s closer to what we?re building today than the facility that we built in the 1980s,? MacBrayne said. ?It?s much closer to what Brunswick has been building since 2004.?

The company plans to change the food and beverage options at the new facility, and MacBrayne said they have a plan to ?really upgrade the game room.? The company also will install new automatic scorers, increase its league support and offer promotions like Cosmic Bowling on Saturdays.

Ace Bowling Center was built in 2008 by Sys-Con LLC president Su Y. Kim, whose holding company owns the shopping center. Kim?s daughter, Jennie Cochren, managed the facility before Brunswick bought it Friday.

?Ace is a great bowling center run by a dedicated team of management and employees,? Brunswick Bowling Retail president Jim Fox said in a news release. ?We are proud to welcome this new center, its operating team and its customers into the Brunswick family.?

Brunswick Zone will be open 10 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday.
