'Good 'Ole Days' offers glimpse into past

MILLBROOK — The Alabama Nature Center provided a step back in time Saturday as various craftsmen gave a glimpse into what life was like in the ?Good ?Ole Days.?
On display included a wood-carving demonstration, antique tractors and various foods being cooked in a Dutch oven. An estimated crowd of 300 to 400 attendees made their way to each table, having fun with the exhibits at the pavilion.
?These are all the things you used to find in those days,? ANC Director Jimmy Harris said.
The day wasn?t just limited to the pavilion, as plants were for sale in the heirloom gardens. In addition, visitors got to tour a house built in the early 1800s that is rarely open to the public.
?The focus of the Alabama Nature Center is nature and getting people outside,? Harris said. ?This (event) is a chance to focus on both of those.?
Harris said he particularly hoped the ?Good ?Ole Days? gave the youngsters in attendance a new perspective.
?The children are missing that connection with nature and the past,? he said. ?Hopefully, this gives them a glimpse into what it was like.?
Wendy Askew said her family has visited the nature center in the past, but came out Saturday to see some of the exhibits. She said the beekeeper was informative and her kids enjoyed the honey.
?It?s nice to be out in nature and this nice weather doesn?t hurt,? Askew said.
A big hit on Saturday were the samples of biscuits being handed out by Russ and Betty Ledlow, who cooked from a Dutch oven.
Betty said cake and potato soup also would be available.
?They aught to be wowing over that potato soup,? Russ said.
